Poor Ham!
We were supposed to leave yesterday. As usual there was more things to bring out to the Dragon than seemed possible after all the other stuff was loaded. Then Ham had to take care of the last minute house things. At last we were ready to go.
Heading over to I-465 via Kessler, when we reached Binford, smoke started puffing from the right front brake. Then, it started pouring out and wafted Heavenward. Egads! A review of the episode in Texas with the LER. There was nothing to do but go back home.
We would have to take it to the Ford dealer on 96th street. Ham, of course, had to see for himself, so he decided to take a look at the wheel. To make a long story short he spun the thing around, heard a crunch, and it seemed to be better after a few spins around the neighborhood.
Did that solve our problems? No, of course not. We still had the tire that was slowly leaking air. I don’t know what we would have done if we had gone on with it leaking, but Ham decided to take the Dragon to a tire store across from Wal-Mart which, of course, couldn’t work on it because of lack of equipment. Sigh!
Off we went to the road to Noblesville (I don’t know the number). I was stunned when they pulled the vehicle right in. We went off to the NY Bagel store for breakfast. Here we had BLT bagels for breakfast and we both found them pretty good.
Back we went, the Dragon was outfitted with a new tire to the tune of a couple hundred bucks and we learned the old tire was a mess. Ham can explain if he wants to. The Great Mechanic of the Universe was looking after us because that would have been one big mess if it had blown on an interstate.
We finally were able to leave town and made it to Dry Ridge in KY where we stayed before at a Cracker Barrel with an empty strip mall behind, we parked like it was old home week.
We had a decent dinner. And, it was time to hit the bed and say good night. nl
Thursday, August 14, 2014
The breakfast was not quite so decent, but we do save beaucoup bucks by not hitting campgrounds. Off we went, and thankfully the Dragon is behaving himself.
When we got to TN, Knoxville loomed ahead of us. The dilemma: Fight the rush hour traffic in Knoxville with those horrible spaghetti turn offs, etc. or go almost to Chattanooga. Ham, the Brave, decided he could master the traffic. And, he did, big time. We literally stumbled on good old RT. 129 and we whizzed right past the UT vet school and farm, past the Mexican restaurant that almost killed Ham who ordered ceviche and paid the price, and past the airport. We reached Alcoa, found the Wal-Mart, ate at Chick Fi lay (I have no idea how to spell it), and now it’s time for beddy bye. We will arrive at Evans’ house tomorrow evening and …….the fun begins. nl
Friday, August 15, 2014
Yep; Chick Fi Lay was lucky enough to get our business for breakfast. They offered an egg, cheese, and sausage on biscuit. It was decent, but we both decided that egg Mc Muffins were still better.
We tootled down the interstate and traffic wasn’t too bad. The scenery was so pretty. When you are away for a few years, like we have been, you forget just how pretty the low mountains are. You don’t have to have giant towering peaks like Colorado to have nice scenery. I suppose that is what motivated us (Ham) to get off the interstate and head south on a two lane road. Well, it was four lane in some sections. We both enjoyed this. Getting off the interstate was like old times sake.
Just as we were getting very close to Evans house, Ham smelled something suspicious. He felt the front left brake and it seemed hotter than the right one. To be sure the temperature was 89. But even so, it brought instant worry that we were repeating the over heated, smoking wheel experience that delayed our trip to start with. So, Hammie pulled into an easy to get McDonalds and we had one of their so so chicken snack wraps, watched little kids play on the playground, and stewed about what was happening to the brake.
Upon checking it after the rest, it seemed to be doing pretty well. So Ham drove cautiously staying in the abominable traffic as best he could without pushing it. Siri picked up the verbal directions and soon we were within a mile of Evans home. She took us all the way after the phone call and, Yaaaay, we arrived.
It was good to see Evans; then, lo and behold there was Marie and and Tachou’s brother and his girlfriend . So it looked like the whole tribe was coming.
We took a tour of the house which is pretty huge and of colonial design. Then we sat in the very dark paneled den? Family room? Whatever, with it’s built in bar and visited for a while. Not wanting to sit with Marie et al and watch TV which we don’t do at home, we declared bedtime.
The Dragon felt cozy and we quickly dressed for bed and hit the hay. After reading for Lord knows how long, it was “Nighty night” time for Hammie and Nan Lou.
Oh yes, Nan Lou II called to check in so there was a rather lengthy phone conversation before bed time. nl
Saturday, August 16, 2014
Today is big party day. We woke up a little after 9:30 A. M. After the ususal morning toilette, we went up to the big house where it looked like everyone was just beginning to stir.
We helped ourselves to bagels and tofu cream cheese and coffee from our own supply.
By then it was time to go back to the Dragon and get dressed for the party of the year. It took place around the swimming pool and the catered snacks and lunch were adequate. There was plenty for everyone including the vegetarians and vegans.
The adults visited and the kids played and then someone took the plunge and playing in the pool was the big thing. This went on for quite a while.
Ham and I enjoyed meeting two people that Evans works with. They were very nice and meeting Romeo who has become Evans’ mentor was a pleasure.
We came back for a rest and Evans and Parker came and stayed for a while. We were then called in for opening the presents. There were, of course, what looked like a clearance sale from a toy store. I suppose I should say from FAO Schwartz since that was the birthplace of the giant elephant.
Evans and Ham fell asleep on the couch a couple of times. I don’t know how the one year old stays awake with all the excitement -------all day long . As I write this it’s about 8:30.
So Hammie has started scrounging some food for supper? Bed time snack? Whatever?
Then it’s quiet time for the elder Browns.
That’s all Folks! nl

Monday, August 18, 2014
All I remember about Monday is checking out a repair shop and going to a BBB and a Target. hb
Tuesday, August 19, 2014
We got up early and hooked LC behind the Dragon and headed for a repair shop that had really good reviews on the net. All in all, after four hours they were able to check everything about the troublesome front brake and declare it good to go. Just one caveat about internal irregularities in the caliper that are undetected by external inspection and tests might crop up. Seeing we haven’t had any trouble I opted to pay their inspection service bill, which was very reasonable, and go back to Evans’ house.
The shop owner suggested we visit downtown Roswell which is all re-gentrified. We only had about an hour and decided it was worth another visit in a day or two.
We did a lot of reading and moved from the Dragon into Evans’ spare bedroom. Evans came home about 11 or 11:30 and we were able to say goodnight. hb
Wednesday, August 20, 2014
Nan Lou had seen something about the restaurant caller Another Broken Egg which we have been to in other southern cities. We did our research, found it, went there, ate a good breakfast, and made remarks about it being better than our favorite Patachou’s at home. hb
Thursday, August 21, 2014
Finally I found the right screws to put the lid on the old desk. We might have done something else like eat at Panera’s but I better not mention that. hb
Friday, August 22, 2014
Nan Lou was in dire straits and needed some nail tools to repair her damaged fingernails. Somehow in our wandering around we stumbled on a Bahama Breeze Restaurant. Not being hungry we had to eat some Key Lime pie. When there was a Bahama Breeze at home we liked their Key Lime pie very much. We each had a piece. It was very big and very good. Later that night we had some Cheesecake Factory plain cheesecake which Tachou brought in for us. We are lucky to still be alive. hb
Saturday, August 23, 2014
No one was around when we got up about 10:30. Later we learned that Evans and the kids were asleep, not knowing that we went to Panera’s. When we got back we found Evans and the kids and learned Gina and Tachou were up stairs doing hair stuff.
swim, ear sushi—— Those are notes to prompt me with our day’s activities. I understand swim, but ear sushi makes no sense at all.
Swim. We spent a lot of time playing in the pool. The large part felt a little cool until you were dunked like a donut and the small hot tub part was very comfy. I didn’t think it would be so much fun. Parker and Evans started a battle with squirters and I just had to join in. Soon Tachou and Gina made their appearance, Tachou had a killer hair do done by sister Gina who very, very skilled at hair dos (or whatever the girls call them now-a-days).
ear sushi—— Might be a typo in a reminder note on the iphone. Might really mean we ate sushi which Tachou went out and brought back. It was a great Asiatic feast for all. hb
Sunday, August 24, 2014
Today was the last day of Evans’s short weekend. It was also Legoland day. Legoland is pretty much in downtown Atlanta and very hard to find. We went in two cars, the BMW and the Jetta. Evans followed Tachou around and around as we tried to make sense out of what the dumb phones were telling us. Plus there was no signs posted for Legoland. Finally we found it and luckily parked nearby in the giant shopping center it was in. It was a long walk to get to Legoscam and the crowds were formidable. It cost $19each to get in which E and T popped for. I think the whole thing is a wonderful idea. Charge for letting you view a mega 3D live commercial for a toy. Granted it is a superior toy which a talented user could use to build a bridge across the English Channel.
The day wore the older Browns out and we hit the sack early. hb
Monday, August 25, 2014
Today was the day to head north toward home. We loaded the Dragon first and then went to breakfast at this quaint little local eatery named Panera Bread. Then it was back to Evans’ house to await Tachou and Parker’s return from his pre-school. When 1 PM rolled around and they weren’t in sight I called and T told me they had some appointment after school. So I did both T and P goodbye on the phone and we headed out.
We were taking I-285 west to I-75 when traffic slowed waaay down and an electric sign warned us of an accident ahead. After about 5 miles of moving like Creeping Jesus things sped up and we passed a wrecker with a really banged up car on it.
Finally on the 75 we went over to US 41 to get away from all those damn four wheelers on the 75. Alas there were a lot of them on 41, but no trucks to speak of. A slow perusal of the campground app and we decided to stop for the night at Red Top Mountain State Park.
It was a rather short day’s drive but the early stop in this very quiet campground sure felt good. NL cooked up some PB&C sandwiches and I will be the first to admit that they were good.
By the way, Happy Birthday to me. I got calls from (alphabetically listed) Evans, Nannie, Parker, RT and Tachou. Nan Lou gave me two nice cards and a kiss. What more could a guy ask for. I especially liked the kiss. hb
Tuesday, August 26, 2014
We slept so late it was almost one by the time we left camp. A Cracker Barrel breakfast sounded nice and we were lucky to find one just a few miles up I-75. They didn’t have a regular RV parking area but there was a place we could park in.
There was a Shell station with a real good slope for filling the Dragon and I went there to gas up. The price was pretty high but I almost got the tank filled. I probably could have but the pump shut off at $90. I didn’t feel like doing it all over for a few more gallons. It was filled more than it has been in a long time.
Another couple of miles we left I-75 and headed north on US 411. It was a pretty nice two lane road. Along the way we decided to go to Fort Mountain State Park. It was 7 miles off the road and uphill all the way. When we got there the office was closed and I started to do the do it yourself thing for the night but was quickly discouraged by the lousy directions and lack of signs pointing to the various camping areas. It wouldn’t have been so bad if we weren’t towing LC and might be able to back up now and then. Back down the mountain and on the lookout for another campground. The camp app said there was one 25 miles ahead and we headed there. It was a wee bit off our road and it took two passes for us to find it, but we did. It is called Adventure Unlimited just outside of Ocoee, Tennessee. I had no idea we were so far north. It is a place that caters to the river rafter crowd and even though we have a pull thru site and electricity it seems to be pretty limited. But it is quiet and pretty nice but they said this weekend is a biggie for the rafters and will be full.
Nan Lou cooked up tuna salad but was feeling to yucky to eat much. I thought it was pretty good and ate too much. hb
Wednesday, August 27, 2014
Night at Chattanooga, TN in Camping World Campground. Ate at a Mexican restaurant we found many years ago and returned to in 2002. It was pretty dirty this time. We will not go there again.
hb
Thursday, August 28, 2014
We spent the night at Dale Hollow State Park, the one in Tennessee, which was very hard to find. We were in an area with poor cell phone, bad Verizon, and the map app wasn’t worth a tinkers damn. After many wrong turns we finally made it. It was pretty nice but was starting to fill up for the weekend. hb
Friday, August 29, 2014
We spent the night at Green River Stables campground. Went there to check on Nannie’s trailer. That’s another story. Were going to go to their Karaoke tonight but when 9 PM rolled around we changed our mind. They might have some live country music tomorrow night but we will probably crap out again.
The temperatures have been in the mid 90s the last couple of days but feel cooler after the sun is almost down.
Phone service continues to be lousy for anything on the net and the campground wifi sucks, as in nonexistent.
I’m getting tired of Apple maps that have to be connected to the internet for decent use. This is on the computer and the phone. Apple sucks as much as Verizon. hb
Saturday, August 30, 2014
We went into town to the Huddle House for a late breakfast only to find it packed. We did a small search down the road for another place and ended up back at the HH where there was one booth vacated. Sunday, August 31, 2014
We slept late again. It rained all night and there were big puddles in the campground roads. Darrel came by with some money for Nannie’s trailer. She’ll get the rest when she sends him the title.
We hooked LC up in a light drizzle and went to the Huddle House for breakfast before we headed north on the two lane roads. Siri and the map were a big help even though there was a slight problem with the program. There were quite a few road changes along the way trying to make the trip to Madison, Indiana as short and as straight as possible.
When we reached the Ohio river we were glad to see the bridge rebuilding was finished and there was a nice wide bridge over the river. The Madison campground was full so we tried Cliffty Falls State Park only to find it was full. That left WalMart for our nightly stay. hb
Monday, September1, 2014
We had only about 100 miles left and the route was an old familiar one on US 421 and I-74. We were home before 1:00 PM and too tired to do much unloading, just the important items. hb

When we reached the Ohio river we were glad to see the bridge rebuilding was finished and there was a nice wide bridge over the river. The Madison campground was full so we tried Cliffty Falls State Park only to find it was full. That left WalMart for our nightly stay. hb

We had only about 100 miles left and the route was an old familiar one on US 421 and I-74. We were home before 1:00 PM and too tired to do much unloading, just the important items. hb
